The DMPTool project began in October 2011, shortly after the NSF requirement for data management plans was announced. Read more at

The original DMPTool project partners included

Partners contributed time and development resources to implement the original DMPTool, which was released in October 2012, and was well-received by the community. Based on the tool’s success in its first two years, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation funded a second version of the DMPTool, released in May 2014.

The code for the DMPTool is open-source and will available on GitHub. The California Digital Library is responsible for storing, managing, and curating the contents of the DMPTool and the plans created with the tool.
